Interim Chancellor for Rutgers–Newark

June 20, 2013

Members of the Rutgers Community,

I am pleased to announce that Todd Clear, Dean of the School of Criminal Justice, has agreed to serve as Interim Chancellor at Rutgers-Newark from July 1, 2013 to December 31, 2013. I am confident he will lead Rutgers-Newark well until Dr. Nancy Cantor takes the helm on January 1, 2014.

Dean Clear has strong roots at Rutgers. He was a Professor in the School of Criminal Justice at Rutgers-Newark from 1978 to 1996, and he returned to Rutgers as Dean in 2010, after his tenure as Associate Dean in the School of Criminology and Criminal Justice at Florida State University and as Distinguished Professor at the John Jay College of Criminal Justice. Dean Clear has provided steadfast leadership for the School of Criminal Justice, and he has become one of the most well-respected voices on campus and in the City of Newark.

Dean Clear is a distinguished scholar and a prolific writer. He has authored or co-authored 14 books—including Imprisoning Communities: How Mass Incarceration Makes Disadvantaged Neighborhoods Worse (Oxford University Press, 2007), and Community Justice (Wadsworth Press, 2003)—and he has written over 100 articles and book chapters. His latest work, The Punishment Imperative (NYU Press), is coming out in September 2013. He was the founding editor of the Journal of Criminology & Public Policy, published by the American Society of Criminology. Dr. Clear is a Fellow of the American Society of Criminology, and he is the recipient of some of the most prestigious awards in his field.

Widely known for his advocacy of evidence-based practice, Dr. Clear’s career has focused on the use of criminal justice research to reduce crime, and he is a leading expert on community justice and incarceration. Moreover, he is part of a proud tradition at Rutgers-Newark that incorporates scholarly practice with community engagement. In addition to his many leadership positions, he has served as president of the American Society of Criminology, the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences, and the Association of Doctoral Programs in Criminology and Criminal Justice.

Please join me in welcoming Dr. Todd Clear as Interim Chancellor for Rutgers-Newark.

Sincerely,

Bob Barchi
President
